Medi-tech / H+: Artificial muscles of carbon nanotubes; Hope for muscular dystrophy patients

Image
Carbon nanutubes artificial muscles close-up shot A team of medical scientists developed a new way to build artificial muscles out of carbon nanotubes . Although the innovatively created artificial muscles have not yet been tested on animal models, they are a very promising development we certainly have to keep our eyes on, especially those suffering from muscular diseases like Fybromyalgia, Polymyositis and Myopathy. Being ultra-light and considerably stronger and more powerful than natural human muscles, 85 times more pound for pound and able to lift over 100,000 times their own weight. Isn't that impressive?! The strength of these artificially made muscles is hidden in a technique of twisting and coiling of the carbon nanotubes, compressing a whole lot of energy into a small volume. The nanotubemuscles are coated with parafin. When heated, that substance causes the carbon nanotube yarn toexpand, causing more coiling and shortening the strands. Heat can be applied to the parafin

Dettol's touch-less soap dispenser

Image
Dettol No-Touch Hand Wash Soap Dispenser System Not quite a new kid on the block, but still well-worth of an article is trhe Dettol No-Touch soap dispenser, a sleekly designed product that allows consumers to enjoy touch-less washing of hands in the comfort of their own home. Sensor-equipped automatic soap dispensers are already in use in many public environments such as airports, shopping malls and train stations, but it's the first time that a similar product is actually meant for the home-use market. And it has even been shortlisted for a 2013 Design Effectiveness Award, which recognizes designs and campaigns that make a clear contribution to the commercial success in the global consumer market. Industrial design group Kinneir Dufort, which created the no-touch for Dettol, stands out among the various brand agencies on the shortlist due to the success of the hand-wash system.

Medi-tech / H+: Bionic eye implants in sight

Image
How does a bionic eye work? One day in the past, bionic eyes  were popularly thought to be the creation of the world of science fiction. Nowadays though many consortia of scientists, eye-specialists and tech-companies are developing bionic eyes for real. Medi-tech (medical technology) experts in Germany have recently developed a nano-chip that helps regain the sight of potentially hundreds of thousands of blind and severely visually impaired people or those with developing degenerative eye diseases such as Retinitis Pigmentosa . Bionic eye of the future In Australia, the "cyber-eye" is being developed and in the United Kingdom, a 48-electrode bionic eye has meanwhile been approved for the European market. The US has now as well followed suir with the approval of a 80 electrode bionic eye. As we move ever closer to real satisfactory bionic eye implants, those that allow us to see in great detail ( focus vision ) as well as spacial vision, bionic eyes become more and more inter

Cars: Honda Micro Commuter EV; transformable for different uses

Wordpress now accepting BitCoins

Image
Buying or selling online can be troublesome hwn some consumers are insisting to pay with real money and some countries even disallowing services such as PayPal. BitCoins is a unique currency on its own, existing purely online. WordPress , the  market-leader  in blogging solutions now wants to honor the use of BitCoins, as part of their mission to "make publishing democratic".  Paying for upgrades, add-ons or themes on WordPress is a real thing and for some of the site's premier bloggers it does make sense. More than 60 countries don't work with PayPal so  there are quite some potential customers that could reach out to use BitCoins.  BitCoin is how WordPress wants to help bloggers from all over the globe to get further into the world of publishing. It isn't a completely flawless payment method, for example refunds aren't yet possible using BitCoins, but WordPress states that they will still honor any refund request, returning cash in BitCoins manually. Windows Live SmartScreen

If you use Windows Live, you probably have already noticed the introduction of SmartScreen , a usefull add-on that allows you to instantly access white-listed locations on the web, redirecting users to interstitial pages or simply denying access to certain pages based on content. SmartScreen is a kind of barrier between the links received in Windown Live services and the actual target. Let me explain how it works. Windows Live Messenger contact list contains personal or business contacts.Nowadays, "block-checker" and other services have been increasingly harvesting account names and passwords to be re-used in link-spam bots that message contacts from the affected account. Since a certain amount of trust is expected from Messenger contacts, malicious links which are sent usually without the account's owner even aware of it, have become a growing irritation among Windows Live users. SmartScreen has therefor been created to form a gateway between the received links in Wind

Architectural 3D printing revolutionized

Image
The future potential to build and realize the concepts of human creativity hide only within the potential of the brain. For many years the architectural world for instance, struggled to keep up with the ability of pen-to-paper and the recent advents in NURB, algorithmic and parametric architecture. This all led to the building and technology industry having to forcefully catch up with the developments in  3D  architectural visualization. As a matter of fact, as  CAD  introduced itself in the 80's, radical transformation in their generative foundations and productive capacities took place and the architectural world found itself most out-of-step and least alert, immersed in ideological and tautological discussions, adrift in a plane of referents severed from material production. The lack of connection between how and what is being designed, and the manifestation of form has dramatically delayed the progress within architecture. One reason for the disconnect is the continued separati

Easy gestures, samentic zoom

Windows 8 is the 1st version of the Windows family using gestures . It's supporting intuitive simple touch gestures such as swiping in from the left to switch apps or swiping in from the right for the Charms menu. Semantic zoom is another trophy feature. Whether you’re in the start screen or a specific application, you can navigate using the pinch-to-zoom gesture to get a high-level view. For instance, you can use semantic zoom in the News app to see all of the news sections available, instead of having to scroll through the app. Othe r useful gesture s include swiping in from the top of the screen for app-specific commands and settings or dragging an app from the top down to close it out.

Automated maintenance on a schedule Windows 8 is equipped with a new feature running automated maintenance tasks such as software updates, security scanning, and other diagnostic tests. By default, it runs them at 3:00 AM, of if you are using your it, the next time your system is in idle mode. You can change the time in the Action Center, or instruct Windows 8 whether or not you want it to wake your system up to perform the tasks.
